Rice junior center Omar Oraby has requested and received his release to transfer to another school, coach Ben Braun said Thursday.
“I want to thank Omar for his contributions to Rice basketball over the past two years,” Braun said. “I want to wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
Oraby averaged six points and 3.6 rebounds and set a school record with 54 blocked shots in 34 games last season.
Oraby becomes the fifth Rice player to depart since the end of last season, joining point guard Dylan Ennis (Villanova), forward Jarelle Reischel (Rhode Island), forward Ahmad Ibrahim (turned professional overseas) and forward David Chadwick (Valparaiso).
The Owls begin practices for the upcoming season Oct. 13.
Senior guard Tamir Jackson weighed in on the latest transfer Thursday afternoon.
